You're Ignoring Your Camera's Most Powerful Dial
There is one dial on your camera that can completely change how your camera behaves, yet most photographers either overlook it or underestimate how powerful it really is. If you find yourself constantly adjusting ISO or rebuilding your exposure every time the light changes, this video will show you a faster and more reliable way to work in the field. You’ll learn why exposure compensation is often the most powerful control on your camera, and how pairing it with Auto ISO allows your camera to adapt instantly while you stay focused on composition.
Most photographers believe the key to sharper photos is simply adding more sharpening, but in many cases, that approach can actually make your images feel less sharp. If you’ve ever taken a photo that looked perfectly crisp in camera, only to feel disappointed with the final result after editing, the problem may not be your camera, lens, or focus at all. It could be the way you’re sharpening your photos. In this video, I’ll show you why sharpening everything in your image can work against you and how applying sharpening more selectively can dramatically improve the perceived sharpness of your photos.
When I first became interested in landscape photography I researched composition more than anything else. I felt that a better understanding of composition was the way to improve my in the shortest amount of time. I listened to every podcast, read every article and watched every video that I could find on the topic. And looking back on all the compositional tips and techniques and best practices, there's only one piece of advice that stands out to me that had the single largest impact on my landscape photography. But, what's most important about this piece of advice is not solely the advice itself, but rather why you want to do this that matters most.
Mastering Focus: Tips & Techniques for Landscape Photos
In this article, we’ll dive deep into the world of focus, a crucial element that can truly make or break your landscape photos. We'll dissect the intricacies of focus along with image sharpness, exploring various techniques and tips to elevate your photography game.
Understanding Focus: Placing Your Focus Point
Let's kick things off by addressing a common conundrum: where exactly should you place your focus point in a scene? It's a question that often sparks some debate among photographers, but the answer for most situations can be quite simple.
If your goal is to achieve maximum depth of field, ensuring sharpness from the foreground to the background, consider placing your focus point roughly a third of the way into your scene. This serves as a solid starting point, but remember, the choice of aperture plays a crucial role here as well. And of course, using a hyperfocal distance calculator can provide invaluable assistance in this regard, ensuring optimal sharpness throughout your composition.
Now, here's a crucial distinction to keep in mind: when we talk about focusing a third of the way into the scene, we're referring to the image displayed on the back of your camera, not necessarily what you perceive with your naked eye. It's a subtle yet significant difference that can impact the overall outcome of your image.
Decoding Focus Modes: Finding Your Perfect Match
Before delving deeper into focus points, let's unravel the mysteries of focus modes. In essence, there are three primary focus modes to consider:
1. Single Autofocus:
Ideal for static subjects, single autofocus locks onto your chosen focus point with precision and efficiency. With complete control over where your camera focuses, it's a preferred choice for landscape photography, offering unparalleled accuracy. >> Read More
