๐ The Exposure Mistake I See Many Beginners Make
Published 4 months agoย โขย 4 min read
Hello my friend!
โ
It's hard to believe fall is just around the corner! I've never been a huge fan of summer photography, so I couldn't be more excited for my favorite time of year to arrive๐. Between now and then, I have a five week break before my fall workshops begin, so I've been working through a massive backlog of unedited photos.
โ
Here's one of those completed images from my recent workshop in the Faroe Islands that I'm really happy with - hopefully you enjoy it as well!
I hope you're able to find some helpful information in this edition, and as always, thanks so much for reading and sharing.
โ
Have a great weekend!

Complete RAW Photo Editing for Landscape Photographers
These "on-location" edit videos have become quite popular over the last couple of years and I wanted to be sure to create one for you while on my trip to Iceland and the Faroe Islands. In this episode, I go through my complete start to finish Lightroom editing process in hopes that you can pick up a couple pieces of helpful information that you can apply to your editing process moving forward.
The Photo Editing Trick Every Photographer Should Know!
This "trick" is something I've been applying to my photos quite often recently and I'm really enjoying the focused attention it provides while at the same time creating a much more dynamic lighting situation. It's often that we receive flat lighting conditions with landscape photography - either on cloudy overcast days or days with full light, but this technique can vastly improve your photos when you receive those all too common conditions.
This mistake is something I'm all too familiar with as this is something I did for the first few years of my photography journey. This exposure issue isn't just something that beginners fall into, but it also impacts all levels of photographers whether you're a beginner or a professional, but like many photography mistakes this is simple to resolve once you understand what the issue actually is.
I'm happy to announce I now have a 2nd tour set for 2025 headed to my favorite Winter Photography destination, the Lofoten Islands! The first tour quicklysold out and the 2nd tour is scheduled for February 7-14, 2025. All itinerary details can be found here - https://markdenneyphotography.com/lofoten-islands-2025โ
Live View vs View Finder: A Landscape Photographer's Perspective
This is a topic that's become increasingly relevant to me and might resonate with you as well: the choice between using live view or the viewfinder for landscape photography. My thoughts on this has changed over recent years as my style of photography and eyesight have shifted.
Transitioning Vision:
Recently, I found myself facing a new challenge โ a decline in my eyesight. For over 30+ years, I took my perfect 20/20 vision for granted. However, as my nearsightedness has worsened, Iโve had to adapt, especially in my photography endeavors where precise vision is a major benefit.
Pros of Live View:
First off, the advantages of live view. With live view, you gain better situational awareness, allowing you to assess your surroundings more effectively. Additionally, you can easily review your entire image, ensuring that nothing unwanted sneaks into the frame. Plus, tap to focus functionality offers a convenient way to pinpoint focus areas, saving valuable time.
Adapting to Unconventional Shooting Positions:
Live view shines when shooting from unusual angles or heights. Its flexibility accommodates low-to-ground compositions or high-angle shots effortlessly, making it a versatile tool for landscape photographers. >> Read Moreโ

Rise of the Square Crop: A Guide to Balanced Landscape Photography
In an era where social media platforms often dictate the dimensions of our images, it's easy to fall into the trap of tailoring our compositions to fit predefined social standards. However, the resurgence of the square crop signifies a departure from the normโa rebellion against the constraints of traditional horizontal and vertical compositions.
But what makes the square format so appealing?
Understanding Visual Flow
Before we dive into the intricacies of square cropping, let's take a moment to explore how our eyes perceive photographs in different orientations. In a horizontal composition, the eye naturally flows from left to right or right to left.
Conversely, in a vertical composition, the eye is drawn upwards or downwards. Basically, the eye follows along the dominant, or longest edge of a photograph, whether thatโs on the top and bottom or left and right side.
Enter the Square: Finding Balance
Now, picture a photograph without dominant edgesโwhere symmetry reigns supreme and every side holds equal weight. This is the essence of the square cropโa realm of balance and harmony, where the eye wanders freely, unhindered by predetermined paths without dominant sides. >> Read Moreโ
